Death note

Hey there, this is GKR.
Today is February 29, 2020, a special day. To mark this special day I am writing a blog about my favourite, not just mine but one of the most popular series in Japanese history.

This is my most exciting blog ever. Is it because of the title? Yes.
DEATH NOTE by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.
By far, in the history of hundred plus years of the publishing industry all over the world, Shonen Jump came up with the best series of all time.

It all began when a guy with the pen name Tsugumi Ohba submitted a one-shot named Death Note to an editor in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 2003. The short stunned the entire editorial team of Shueisha and thus a go-ahead was given to publish the series in the magazine. They hired the best artists in Japan to do the artwork for this new manga. The artist was Takeshi Obata who was famous for drawing Hikaru no go.
The combo delivered as expected. Death note that ran in the magazine from 2003 to 2006 became the best manga ever written of all time.

Why is this manga so good?
It's because of the following features,

  1. Unique premise and plot
  2. Unbelievably intelligent characters
  3. Great gimmicks
  4. Wit and humour
  5. Art that suits the darkness of the story

Before Death note was published, Shonen Jump had a rule of publishing only the lighthearted comics in their magazine to attract young readers. But Death note was a revolution. It changed the way how manga was made. It created a new dimension in the world of Japanese comics.
More than the Japanese readers, it was the foreign readers who were amazed by the storyline. The entire otaku world was in chaos, spreading the manga everywhere, making sure it gets recognized for its genius.

Let's talk a little about why I love the manga personally. It is futuristic and intelligently written. Being a writer, I know how tough it is to write scenes that involve gimmicks, wit and humour. It is especially tough when the characters are more intelligent than the writer himself. But Tsugumi Ohba managed to deliver the best characters ever written. The series is worth the hype.
Netflix tried to adapt this series into a film but failed miserably proving that only Tsugumi Ohba has the ability to write such intelligent characters and plot twists.

It is a 12 volume manga and I bought the box set in offer from an online store for 2000 Indian rupees (USD 29). The box set also includes additional collectors edition book that has the personal interview of the makers and also some interesting facts. It also has the one-shot that was published.
In a nutshell, go to your nearby book store, purchase the entire series, read it as soon as you buy it. Trust me, this is one series everyone must read before they die. (The series is also available as anime in Netflix, but still, I read it as manga, as anime is always telecasted only after the manga is published)

L and Light Yagami will always be the best characters ever written in the history of manga comics.

Disappointing Biographies

Hey there, this is GKR . I love both Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella and so I wanted to know more about their childhood and their passions. I just completed reading the so-called biography of Satya Nadella by Jagmohan S.Bhanver. The book is titled "Nadella - The changing face of Microsoft." But the book talks more about Steve Balmer than Nadella.  Satya Nadella is indeed a guy who prefers a private life but the facts in the book are too general that we can read in Wikipedia. This is not a review blog but I can say for sure that this book is not worth the time and money. The same author has also written the book "Pichai - The future of Google." This book is about Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet. This book has some valuable information about the man himself but still lacks the same flow of the read. It starts with great information about his childhood but then suddenly dives into the lives of other Google employees and founders of Google r...

E-books versus Paperbacks

Hey there, this is GKR . There is always a dilemma for beginners if they should buy a book as a paperback or buy a Kindle device to read the books as E-books. I prefer paperbacks. It is fun to hold the book in your hand while reading. It feels real. But it also comes with some disadvantages like cost, weight etc. Let me brief you about my experience in using Kindle for reading and buying paperbacks for reading. Advantages of Paperbacks: You get the feel of actually reading and completing the book. Turning pages feels like a reward. Paperback books smell good. It boosts your motivation to read more. Does not require batteries or electricity to read These books if preserved well will be with you in your library for a lifetime. Advantages of Kindle/E-reader: It is small and convenient It can hold thousands of books Books are cheaper Easy to take your device while on travel Easy to read in low light Paperbacks take up a lot of space whereas Kindle ...

Books versus Films

Hey there, this is GKR . In this era, people who watch films and series are more than that of the people who read books. Game of Thrones and Harry Potter has more viewers as a Film and Series but has fewer readers comparatively as book series. Why is this difference important? It is important because people do not understand how books can change their lives. They do not understand how books can create an impact on how they live, how they work and how they die. Let me give you an insight. Disadvantages of watching a film adaptation of novels: It destroys your imagination There is a lot of detailing in books than in films/series. Lots of character flaws can be found in films as they have less time to get deeper into character emotions You get to spend less time with the characters and the story Technical flaws in the film/series might make the story fail. For example if the visual effects are not par with the imagination of the original author then it fails. There is ...
